The opportunity:

The Community Engagement Specialist, African NS Communities, will contribute to developing and implementing the African Nova Scotian Community Retrofits Pilot. This role will work to build constructive relationships with African Nova Scotian communities and organizations across Nova Scotia.

The Community Engagement Specialist is the liaison between EfficiencyOne and African Nova Scotian communities, with a primary focus on Preston Township and Guysborough. They will actively engage and educate community members by providing resources and information regarding the benefits of energy efficiency and our programs and demonstrating the potential for energy savings. They will also assist with the key action items related to the pilot’s launch and future operations. This role requires effective communication, presentation, excellent time management, and organizational skills to be adaptable and results-driven.

  • Support each phase of the African Nova Scotia Community Retrofit pilot outreach, planning, and delivery.
  • Main point of contact for the communities of The Preston township and Guysborough.
  • Responsible for providing support or assistance to community members with the applications for the pilot program.
  • Responsible for gathering feedback from The Preston Township and Guysborough communities for ongoing improvements of the African Nova Scotia Community Retrofit pilot.
  • Provided guidance (as needed) on addressing customer complaints and inquiries.
  • Assist Community Engagement Led to perform the following: site visits in response to participant concerns (as needed); completing forms to document customer experience; gathering feedback to inform supplier performance; and working with EfficiencyOne to develop a list of any remediation actions for contractors or delivery partners.
  • Responsible for working with The Preston Township and Guysborough communities, delivery partners, associations, and other partners to develop educational/training materials, schedule and conduct engagement events and initiatives, and distribute marketing materials.
  • Regular communication with the leaders, organizers, and community members of The Preston township and Guysborough to ensure they are well-informed on all Efficiency Nova Scotia programs.
  • Support members of the community in Preston Township and Guysborough in seeking and selecting contractors to perform the upgrades on the selected homes and businesses.
  • Assist with supporting the pilot’s development and offer feedback on all aspects of the initiative, including, but not limited to, eligibility criteria, participant processes, eligible measures, website content, printed materials, application forms, and scopes of work for partners / internal staff.
  • Responsible for supporting the marketing and communications team in developing outreach and marketing strategies and materials.

What Will Help You Succeed?

  • Community College or University degree or diploma in a business-related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Existing relationships and demonstrated ability to work in and with African Nova Scotian communities.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle with a clear driver’s abstract (Can be discussed if you do not have one).
  • Project management, including planning, designing, and execution, would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficient with all Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
  • The ideal candidate should have excellent oral and written communication skills, generate ideas, be innovative, and be a creative problem solver.
  • The ideal candidate should have the ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality, diplomacy & discretion.

What to expect in your first several weeks on the job:

In the first week, expect to:

  • Orientation to EfficiencyOne and Efficiency Nova Scotia organization
  • Orientation to the Partnership and Quality Assurance Team
  • Orientation to the African Nova Scotian Communities Retrofit Pilot Project (ANSC Pilot) Team
  • Introduction to the tools and resources used by the team

In the first month, expect to:

  • Orientation and Overview with HR
  • Orientation and Overview of Efficiency NS Programs supporting the ANSC Pilot
  • Orientation and introductions to community leaders and community organizations in the ANSC Pilot areas
  • A detailed review of all re-occurring tasks and reporting requirements
  • Participation in weekly team meetings
  • Participation in at least 2 community engagement or outreach sessions
  • To work closely with the Community Engagement Lead to train and learn how to execute various duties.

In the first three months, expect to:

  • Perform core duties independently
  • Execute organization of community engagement or outreach sessions
  • Support the development of marketing materials and information-sharing campaigns with the Preston Township and Guysborough communities
  • Manage the outreach calendar of events, confirming upcoming opportunities and tracking ENS participation to date
